Piper raised her glass of punch to Stark Raven and toasted her back. “Thanks for all you did.”
“I was just one piece of the puzzle.” Stark Raven shrugged. “We all got a piece. It was you that put the pieces together.”
“I had a lot of help,” Piper admitted.
“That’s not a bad thing. Some puzzles are more difficult than others. I wouldn’t be nothing without my friends.”
The chipmunk on Stark Raven’s head began to flick his tail and chuckle.
“Keep your fur on,” Stark Raven said, looking up toward him. “We’re going, we’re going. Well, I’d best be on my way. There’s a party, and we’re late.”
Piper moved aside so that Stark Raven could go into the barn. “I didn’t know you came to dances.”
“Ha! Wouldn’t be caught dead at that thing. No, there’s a real humdinger by the stream. Those badgers know how to throw shakers. Don’t think you’d like it, though.”
Stark Raven melted back into the forest without so much as a good-bye. Piper could only imagine what sort of forest party Stark Raven was going to. No doubt it involved worms, rocks, groundhogs, and birds.
In the barn behind her, the fiddles started up a waltz, and Conrad poked his head out. “May I have this dance, Miss McCloud?”
Piper glowed. “You may.”
Taking Conrad’s hand, she let him lead her onto the dance floor, and she made her absolute best attempts to keep her feet from floating off the ground as they danced the night away. She was only partly successful.
