      Blue Motel Room

You do not sleep with your best friend’s girlfriend. Especially not when you’re both extremely drunk on mead…and gay. Ron hoped the night with Eve was nothing more than a figment of his imagination that will never return to haunt him, or harm his friendship with Kimbra.

Except Kimbra also had a regretful drunken interlude she hoped would never see the light of day.

Enter the adorable Dr. Ivan Mercado, who carefully conceals deeply tragic personal truths. The young and talented surgeon leads a secret double life to deal with his darkest pain and has never let anyone inside his armor before. Until he meets Ron, and the Viking Dom easily peels away Ivan’s shell without even trying.

But actions have consequences—ones that can last a lifetime. Will the worst mistake of Ron’s life turn out to be the best thing that ever happened to him? Or will it destroy both men’s lives and crush their hearts forever?

      Chapter One

Late Thursday afternoon, and Kimbra was working on one hell of a tension headache. She was the last one in the office and knew she should head home…but home was feeling awfully empty as of late.

Mostly because she knew there was little to no chance of having any company tonight, or this weekend, either. She and Eve were currently in an “off again” phase of their relationship. Not really officially “off,” but on the down-low in a way that double agents living in deep cover would find envious. After a couple of years of this, it was starting to…wear a little thin on Kimbra.

It was a predictable cycle. When Eve got like this, Kimbra always gave her plenty of room, no pressure to step things up a notch, going at Eve’s speed. Just when Kimbra would start to get her hopes up that Eve might finally decide that this time she was going to take that extra step forward—

That’s when Eve would scurry deep inside her closet again.

Hell, Eve still hadn’t come out to her brother—who was gay. Or to her parents—who’d whole-heartedly accepted Ev and his husband, Wylie.

The only people who knew about them dating were Kimbra’s own kinky ex-husband, Walt, one of Kimbra’s co-workers—who was also kinky—and a few of their kinky friends. Most of those assuming they were nothing but best friends.

      Including Eve’s kinky brother, Ev.

Kimbra tossed her pen onto her desk and sat back, rubbing at her eyes.

They weren’t exactly exclusive, yet neither of them were seeing anyone else at the moment. They actually had permissions set in place they could date or even sleep with others, as long as they were safe and notified the other about it. Neither of them had slept with anyone else.

Why am I not pushing her harder for a commitment? Or at least a resolution?

In many ways, their relationship was perfect. They were both independent, they were both lawyers, both made decent livings, and they were both orbiting close enough to the kinky world to be slightly influenced by it, but not needing to be full-on gimp-suited all the time.

Kimbra’s phone buzzed with a text and she was simultaneously delighted and disappointed to discover it was from her best friend, Ron.

Hitting the Toucan this Saturday. All night. Wynn & Meri out. Need wingman. Y’in?

She’d met him several years ago first through her father—because Ron worked for him as an electrician—but then their paths also crossed when Ron and his sister started attending munches a couple of months ago. Gay, and he was a sweetheart she enjoyed spending time with as friends. Besides Walt, she’d definitely call Ron her best friend.

She didn’t have to reply immediately, even though she already expected what Eve’s answer would be. Instead, Kimbra swiped open her ongoing text thread with Eve and texted her.

Do we have plans this weekend?

She hadn’t even set her phone down before Eve replied.

I’m swamped with a case. Need to put in extra hours. If you have plans, go ahead. I’m good. No worries.

Kimbra stared at the screen for a long moment, struggling against the urge to throw her phone across the room.

It wasn’t worth getting angry, though. One of the things she’d loved about this whole situation early on was not having someone clingy hanging off her. Not having someone needing to have her there with them, all the time. Even better, Eve was also an attorney, although she practiced corporate law, not criminal. That meant she got it when Kimbra was hung up with a case, or needed to burn the midnight oil researching.

That approach had kinda backfired on Kimbra, though, the pendulum swinging too far in the other direction from not-smothering to non-existent physical contact.

She finally decided on a reply that wouldn’t sound bitchy or passive-aggressive.

Okay, thanks. Good luck with your case, boo.

Kimbra was about to set her phone down when it vibrated again.

      Have fun, ;)

Kimbra leaned back in her chair. So many fucking ways to interpret that, but she’d do what she always did with Eve and take it at face value.

      Thanks.

This time, her phone made it to her desk.

Except she picked it up again, immediately swiped into Ron’s message, and replied.

      You’re on. Time/ride?

      * * * *

Eve tucked her phone into the pocket of her blazer and tried to pretend she hadn’t been ignoring every damn thing opposing counsel had said during the past few minutes. She wasn’t lead on this negotiation, at least, so she didn’t have to be paying attention.

      She should be, but…

Get your mind back into the game, Cannon.

She hadn’t seen Kimbra in a couple of days and hated the way she felt turning her down for the weekend.

Eve was under no illusions that Kimbra had basically been asking if they were going to get together, or if she should make other plans.

A slight bit of guilt knowing that Kimbra had likely been offered viable plans by someone else, and she’d been indirectly asking if they were going to get together…or if she could accept whatever offer whoever else had offered her.

A slightly thicker twinge of jealousy wove itself through that complex tapestry, too.

That compounded Eve’s guilt and self-loathing, that she’d indirectly shut Kimbra down.

      Especially with a lie.

The truth was, Eve had a dirty secret planned for her weekend—she would binge-watch Hallmark movies awaiting her on her DVR, catch up with her laundry…and re-evaluate her life choices.

Including how unfair she was being to Kimbra.

Two hours later, she had take-out sushi spread across her coffee table and had shed her pantsuit for Flintstone leggings and an old T-shirt.

Sure, nearly every ounce of common sense she had in her head told her the rational thing would be to come out to her family, publicly acknowledge her feelings for Kimbra, and…

      Then what?

It would also mean acknowledging a certain…finality to her life. She wasn’t interested in dating around or…

      Sigh.

Ever since high school, when she realized being bisexual was a thing, she wasn’t ready to close off any of her options. She liked guys, she liked girls.

Not all guys, and not all girls.

Never before had she ever felt an attraction to someone strong enough to make her want to…decide.

      On that one person.

      Until Kimbra.

Eve wasn’t poly, so that wasn’t the problem. She only wanted to be with one person.

Then there was the question of kids. She’d yet to decide on that, either.

It wasn’t a question of how to have them, duh. If she was with a woman, medical intervention. That was straightforward. IVF, or if she couldn’t conceive, adoption.

      Kimbra didn’t want kids, though.

And Eve…well, she thought maybe she did.

While Eve knew herself to be a relatively damn good corporate attorney, she was shit at deciding things for herself in her personal life.

Settling down with Kimbra, and putting it all out there, outing herself in a formal kind of way that was…

      Permanent.

      Or, it should be.

; She didn’t want to commit to Kimbra if she couldn’t commit for life.

Eve couldn’t commit to spending her life with someone else if she couldn’t even fucking decide what she wanted for sure.

Like settling the option of children in her mind.

That wasn’t fair to Kimbra, either, and Eve damn well knew it.

I’d deserve it if she met someone else and moved on.

Another reason she hadn’t put being exclusive on the table. They’d both dated a couple of times in the past, but hadn’t slept with anyone.

      Yet.

Would this be the weekend they finally hit the “Kimbra’s done putting up with Eve’s shit” level?

      I guess we’ll find out.

      * * * *

Ron felt a little bit of melancholy to pull into his driveway and realize Meri wasn’t home, even though he hadn’t been expecting her to be home tonight since he knew her fiancé, Wynn, was caught in a vicious pain cycle right now and she was staying with him.

      Darn.

No, that wasn’t fair, and he knew it. He was genuinely happy for her and Wynn, who was quickly looking like he would become Ron’s brother-in-law.

But Ron wouldn’t deny having Meri living with him had been great.

Had chased the lonely away from his own life.

He walked inside, reset the alarm, and headed down to his bedroom to grab a shower.

      I need to get laid.

That was the reason for the trip to the Toucan that weekend. Find someone to fuck—maybe even spank them—and bust a nut.

At this point, he wasn’t even caring about looking for forever. He just wanted to fuck a real flesh-and-blood human instead of his own goddamned hand or a jack toy.

His problem was, he was picky.

Which was why dating apps usually didn’t pan out for him.

Allowed him to meet plenty of nice guys, but most of them he didn’t want to fuck.
