“I don’t think team attitude is one of your problems,” Kal said. “I am, though.”
Quiver put her coffee down. She didn’t want any more of it. She didn’t think her stomach could handle it. Kal was staring at her with a sharp scrutiny that made her innards skitter.
Then she remembered and dug in her pocket and pulled out the linked beads and the flat, silvered disk. “Here. You dropped it in the arena, when we were getting everyone back in.”
He took the lucky charm, moving slowly. He pulled it on his big palm. “You didn’t open it?”
“You can open it?” She shook her head.
He scratched at the edge of the flat disk with the corner of his thumbnail. “I finally remembered who you are. Were. When you were Anna and eight years old. You were the sweetest thing I’d ever met. You were all blue eyes and masses of golden hair.” His mouth twitch. “Still are, when you let your hair out of the playing clips.”
Quiver didn’t feel like smiling, though.
“You kissed me,” Kal said.
She jumped. “I did?”
He nodded. “You may not remember it. I do. I have remembered the angel with the blue eyes all my life. I remember her devotion. Her sweetness. I think she ruined me for anyone else, for all that I was only eleven and you were only eight. Love is very pure and ideal at that age and impossible to replicate when you get older.”
“I thought you had forgotten about me,” she whispered.
“I did forget, all but the too perfect ideal of you.” He was still working at the disk, leveraging up the lid. “You gave me a birthday present. That’s what the kiss was for—my birthday. You liked to paint things. So you printed it and painted it, mixing up your own silver paint.” He eased back the lid, picked up the object resting inside and held it up for her to see.
It was the outline of a heart, with an arrow through it. The silver paint was still pristine and shining.
“Quiver and arrow,” he said. “You told me we belonged together. I have never forgotten it.”
Quiver couldn’t breathe.
He put the fragile ornament back in the case and closed the lid. “The very next day, I got an invitation to try out for an adult tankball team, an amateur one. My luck hasn’t run out since then.” He put the charm back in his jacket pocket, then picked up her hand. “Anna.”
Quiver let out a breath that shuddered.
“I’m going to mess up your life.”
“You’ve already done that.” Her voice was bodiless.
“Why don’t you mess up mine, then? Just as you did when you were eight.”
“How?”
“Kiss me, to start.”
She did.
