“Enough, Will,” Molly said. “Nick knows his history as well as you do. He gets it.”
Will nodded. “Let’s change subjects then. Nick, are these people going to come after Linda again?”
Nick hesitated.
Molly picked up her husband’s hand and gripped it. “Oh…” she whispered.
Nick grimaced. “There is one way to ensure they don’t try again.” He glanced at Will. “You might not like it, though.”
“Announce the deal?” Will said.
“Once the announcement has been made public and contracts are signed, they can’t stop it by coming after Molly.”
“I thought your Cabinet had to decide?”
Nick shrugged. “I have a certain amount of influence.”
“There’s the stoic again,” Molly said.
“Would you have picked Astra, if this hadn’t happened?” Will asked.
“I’d already decided, yesterday. You know that. You can read people, too. You guessed I leaned that way.”
“Yes.” Will grinned. “You won’t regret it, Nick. Vistaria won’t regret it.” He held out his hand.
Nick shook it. “Until the deal is locked in and a public announcement made, you and Molly should fade away somewhere. Let your Vice Presidents take over.”
“I’ll think about it,” Will said and Nick, who could read people, too, knew he had no intention of stepping back and letting someone else control the deal.
Will glanced over Nick’s shoulder and nodded. “A few last details to take care of,” he muttered. “Excuse me.”
When he had gone, Molly put her hand against the teapot to test the temperature, then poured herself another cup. “Is there anyone in your life, Nick?”
“There’s been a few.”
“Anyone special? You know.”
“Since you?” Nick shook his head.
“Oh, Nick, that’s…”
“It’s the reality of a life spent running a country,” Nick replied.
“You’re so rigid now,” Molly breathed. “I did that, didn’t I?”
“Not just you,” Nick told her.
She considered him. “Do you still keep that Saint Christopher medallion in your pocket?”
Nick pulled it out and let it dangle from the chain so she could see it. He put it back.
“Then the romantic in you isn’t completely dead. One day, that side of you will rear up and rebel, too. You will be in trouble, on that day.”
“I hope not,” Nick said fervently. “I can only face one revolution at a time.”
