“Rawn, we are only a few miles from Corneus,” she said softly. “The men will want to reach home quickly now.”
Rawn pointed. “What is that place?”
The land he pointed to shimmered and shifted, not just on the horizon, but everywhere. It laid silvered and still, with touches of green here and there.
“That is the Summer Country,” Mair said. “They say it is called that because only in late summer of very dry years, when all the fens and water have gone, is it any sort of country at all. Only the locals know how to travel through it.”
“Horses, men, whole armies have been lost and never found again,” Iwan added helpfully, from just behind them.
“The perfect defense line,” Rawn murmured. “And that?” He pointed to the high, conical hill to the north, which seemed to float above the flat, watery land. It would be visible for miles and miles in this country.
“That is Ynys Wydryn,” Iwan added.
“It’s also called Ynys Gutrin,” Dylan said.
“Isle of Glass,” Rawn muttered, staring at the place.
Mair frowned. “Hywel says it was called something else, long ago.” She reached back in her memories. “Yes. He called it Ynys yr Afalon.”
“Avalon,” Rawn repeated. He shivered and shrugged it off, then picked up his reins once more. He looked at Mair. “Let’s go home.”
At the same time…
HE SETTLED HIMSELF BACK AGAINST the cushions, feeling the unaccustomed ache of muscles he’d scarcely thought to flex ever again. Yet there it was, a most unexpected but pleasant satisfaction.
She settled in against him and rested her head on his shoulder, and that, too, was a novelty he’d never thought to experience. He rested his arm over her, feeling soft flesh beneath his fingertips.
“That is the second sigh you have made since you sat up, my lord,” she chided him.
“Oh, it has nothing to do with your company, my lady,” he assured her. “Well, yes, it has, dammit. I’m humbled…and not a little grateful that you chose me. You are a political strategist, Morgan, and I am not a man of influence—not the sort of man you would find of use. You would be better off seducing a man like Lancelot and gain far more power that way. So I know it is not why you are here, now, in my arms.”
Morgan, Queen of Lothian, looked up at him, her big eyes warm and soft. “No, you are not here for my political gain,” she said, her voice as soft as her skin.
“Then why?”
She trailed her fingers down his chest, over the old battle scars, making King Mark’s flesh tingle with delight. “The truth, my lord, is that when I looked at you…when I properly looked at you, my heart stopped. I have not slept a night since then.”
