Raymond took her hand and walked around the bush. “There’s a bloom here you missed…” Then he straightened up with a snap. “It’s black,” he said quietly.
Natasha laughed self-consciously. “Seth had it brought back from Turkey one year. It’s only supposed to grow there. He wanted to try, anyway.”
Raymond took the sheers from her hand and put them down, then took both her hands in his. “You were the one who sent me the ebony roses, when Rose died.”
Natasha jumped a little. “Yes, I did,” she admitted. “It seems so silly now. I wanted to let you know I knew exactly what you were going through. At the same time, I didn’t want to bother you while you were grieving.”
“You cared,” Raymond said, his voice low. “All along, you did care.”
“Of course I did,” she said warmly. “You are family.”
“Those roses were what made me come here, last year. I had withdrawn from everything, almost to the bitter end. The roses told me that there might possibly be something worth living for, somewhere.” He laughed. “And there was.”
He kissed her and Natasha let herself melt into her husband’s arms, regardless of who might be watching.
