“Will I ever see you again?” Alex asked, getting to his feet, too.
Brody considered him. “Have you ever been to England?”
“Never,” Alex confessed.
“There is a city there that has been there time out of mind. The Romans called it Eboracum. The Saxons called it York and it still has that name. In one hundred years, go to York. I suspect the city will still be there, but even if it isn’t, the ruins will be. I’ll do my best to be there, too. If Veris can withstand the damp for a few months, I’ll bring him, too.”
“Twelve hundred and ninety-one,” Alex said. “What month? What day?”
“If I’m not there when you get there, stay for a year. I’ll find you.”
Then Brody pulled him into a hard embrace, surprising him. Alex felt a small warm glow of comradeship and knew that come what may, he would be there in York in the appointed year.
Friendship demanded nothing less.

Los Angeles, a few minutes later…
“Did you meet each other in York?” Taylor asked.
Veris snorted. “Of course they did. Brody stranded me in Greenland for six months. He never did tell me what he was up to, but he came back with a contented air, so I never asked.”
“Because he came back, or because he was content?” Alex asked.
“Yes,” Veris said flatly.
Alex smiled and looked at Taylor. “So there you have it. My foolishness in Technicolor.”
“Brody’s right,” Taylor said. “You’re too nice to be a vampire.”
Alex raised his brows. “And on that note….” He got to his feet. “It is far too late for very pregnant humans to still be awake. It is time I went home and let you sleep.”
“Can’t take the heat when the spotlight is on you, infidel?” Veris asked.
Taylor gasped and clapped her hand to the side of her belly. “Oh my god,” she said breathlessly.
Veris moved to her side and bent over her, his hand against her belly, too.
“There was…it felt like an elastic breaking,” she said.
Brody got to his feet.
“It was your water breaking,” Alex said calmly. “As soon as you move, it will run freely.”
“Not all over the Craftsman chair!” Taylor cried.
“Who gives a shit about the chair?” Brody shot back. “Veris, pick her up.”
“Why?” Taylor demanded. “I’m not an invalid.”
“You’re in labor,” Alex assured her. “You’re entitled to be carried.” He dug in his jacket pocket and pulled out car keys. “I’ll meet you at the hospital,” he told Veris as the Northman scooped her up off the seat.
The movement shifted her and liquid gushed noisily, splashing across the tiles at their feet and dampening Veris’ arm. Taylor moaned and hid her face against Veris’ shoulder.
Alex grinned and headed for the front door, leaving them to follow. It was going to be a long night, but it wouldn’t be the first and the company would be excellent. Besides, the birth of a baby was far more cheerful work than stitching up war wounds.
Life was good.
