      “I doubt it.”

She looked around and nodded. “It worked exactly as planned then. After the last Dreamer died, each player exited into this zone instead of the main one and believe that this has always been their only reality.”

“A few hundred thousand did not make it.”

Loredana sighed and bowed her head.

“But most did.” He shrugged and threw more crumbs. “You saved over four billion people, girl. They get to live normal lives in a reality very much like the one they started out from. I’d say you and the boys did a good job of cleaning up the colossal mess you made.”

“Is Earth from the Game is Life series like our original world?”

      “Pretty much.”

Her shoulders sagged and she began to cry. The old man patted her shoulder. “I expect that is a significant load off your shoulders. You go ahead, girl. You’ve earned yourself a good cry.”

After a few moments, she stopped and wiped her eyes. “Where are Shawn and Ivan?”

“Shawn is somewhere on this large planet. He won’t remember what happened like you do.”

      “Why not?”

      “No need.”

      “And is Ivan here?”

      The old man shrugged.

      “What’s that mean?”

      “He’s fine, don’t worry.”

      “He saved us all.”

The old man laughed. “No he didn’t. You did.”

“What?” She shook her head. “He was key. The three of us each did our part.”

“Shawn wrote a story. He’s a storyteller and that’s what they do. As for Ivan Thorne—” The old man shrugged. “Thornes are an interesting lot. I find they are much like a good bottle of hot sauce. Useful for adding flavour to the meal, but without the actual food, they just sit on the shelf and don’t do much of anything.” He put the bag down and dusted his hands, the bottle caps singing. “No, this was your show from start to finish, my girl.”

      She laughed. “I disagree.”

      “Your prerogative.”

He stood, the rustling of the black garbage bags covering his frame scattering the birds. Loredana watched as he stretched, yawned, then looked down at her.

“So what do I do now?”

      “Bored already?”

      “No.”

“It’s okay, don’t feel bad. Your kind usually are.”

      “My kind?”

“That’s right.” He reached into a pocket and withdrew his hand. “Truth is, there is more for you. This isn’t your world. You helped to create it, but there is nothing for you here. Besides, you’ve proved that you are capable of so much more.”

He stretched his arm toward her and opened his hand. Resting on his palm were three red pop bottle caps.

She looked at the bottle caps and then at the old man.

“Well.” He jiggled his hand. “They belong to you. Go ahead and take ‘em.”

She held out her hand and he dropped them into her palm. “What do I do with them?”

He winked. “I’ll show you how to make a lovely pair of gloves.”

      “And then what?”

The old man laughed. “I have absolutely no idea, my dear girl. No clue at all.” He leaned in and grinned, the expression making him appear younger and mischievous. “And if you ask me, that’s the absolute best part of this game called life.”
