“Hey,” Jo said. “I’m not just some… You’re right. I’m a happy little baker.” Puggles waddled over and sat on the edge of Jo’s foot, looking up at her in admiration as if to say, I don’t mind.
Vex nodded at the pug. “And let me know if you ever want me to glamour that into something… less horrifying.”
“He’s not horrifying,” Dallin said, walking over to Puggles and scooping him up protectively in one arm. “He’s perfect.”
Jo walked over to the plate of cupcakes. “Here, at least take these with you. I’ll put them in a bag.”
Ultraviolet looked sorely tempted, her purple eyes flashing as she stared at the plate. Then she shook her head. “I’m good.” She looked at Dallin. “Nothing is over yet. You two need to watch each other’s backs. And the backs of those dragons you’re working with.”
“Tell me what’s happening,” Dallin said softly. “At least tell me you’ll warn me if things get worse. Or ask if you need me.” He sighed. “You aren’t… caught up in something bad, are you?”
Vex shook her head instantly. “No. Me?” She gave a nervous chuckle. “I always have things under control. You know that.”
He cocked his head. “That’s sort of what worries me.”
Vex’s face went serious for a moment. Then she waved a hand behind her, forming a swirling purple portal of smoke. “Don’t worry about it. Just keep you and Jo safe.” She walked toward the portal and then paused, looking at them over her shoulder. “I’ll try to keep you out of it out of respect for our friendship. But just in case, don’t get too soft living with your cute baker,” was Vex’s final warning before she walked into the portal and disappeared out of sight.
It swirled and hissed, then slowly became smaller and smaller until it was gone.
Jo sighed, taking a seat again as Dallin followed, setting Puggles down so he could walk after them, tongue lolling out of his mouth.
Life had been idyllic the past couple of weeks. Just settling in with Dallin. Getting to know him. Seeing in every moment that they were even more meant to be together than she had ever thought.
Whether he was showing up on camera to threaten perverted fans or delighting her other fans or tasting her food or scratching Puggles, life was utterly perfect.
“For what it’s worth, I could have told you that you were a badass,” Dallin said, reaching for the plate of cupcakes. “You managed to manifest and call out to me at the worst moment. I’m sure if you wanted to fight and learn to use more of your powers—”
“That’s okay,” Jo said, pushing the plate toward him, as there were still half a dozen cupcakes on it. “I’m just not a violent person. I guess it’s good that I’m in love with a big, strong dragon who will fight all of my fights.”
“Of course,” he said, giving her a warm smile as he grabbed around for a cupcake, his hand simply knocking on the plate. “What the…?”
In a puff of sparkles, the cupcakes on the plate disappeared, revealing only crumbs as evidence they had ever been there.
Dallin stood, fists clenched, sending a look of pure fury at the portal through which Vex had exited. “That damn fairy…”
Jo just laughed, going over to hug her dragon around his firm waist. “Glamour?”
He nodded. “It was one thing when she merely masked her true appearance or turned me into a cat… but using dirty tricks to steal the last of the cupcakes…” He shook his head. “Unforgivable.”
Jo moved around to his front, winding her hands around his neck. “Anything I can do to make it up to you? Make another batch?”
He grinned down at her, then scooped her up into his arms. “I can think of something more delicious if you really want to distract me.”
Jo just giggled as he carried her toward the bedroom.
As long as she had her dragon, life would always be sweet.
