He’d very strategically picked that seat at the back of the class. The seat gave him the perfect advantage of being able to catch some Z’s without being in the line of sight. He stopped in front of the seat, not feeling very curious about the smoking hot blonde sitting there. She was gorgeous, and he’d never seen her before.
So what? Didn’t matter. She was in his seat. “Hey,” he said.
The smoking hot blonde cocked an eyebrow at him. “Hey.”
He was puzzled by her indignation, and he hesitated, giving her a once-over. She wore a black leather jacket, black leather pants, and fire-red lipstick, and her blond hair went on for days. You’d think by a description like that the woman would be a Barbie, but this woman was far from Barbie-ish. She looked like a cross between a model and a biker chick.
“You’re gonna have to move,” he said, standing right in front of the desk. What was that saying by Abraham Lincoln? Something about not being afraid when fighting for what was rightfully yours, especially if God was on your side. It was a bit extreme for such a mundane situation, but he was a bit extreme.
Shelia, the girl sitting on the other side of the smoking hot blonde, shook her head. “I told her this was your seat, Jack. She wouldn’t listen.”
He narrowed his eyes at the blonde. “Should have listened to her.”
She lifted her chin at him and looked at her notebook, which was covered in doodles.
Pfft. He’d invented that move. “Excuse me,” he demanded.
She flashed her blue eyes his way. In a mock cheery voice, she said, “Oh, you want to be a gentleman and introduce yourself and welcome the new girl. Well, thank you for welcoming me. It’s hard to be the new girl. My name is Tauni Richfield.” Her face slipped back into its previous unamused look, and she stuck her hand out. “So nice to meet you.”
That was not the reaction he’d expected. The way she held out her hand, all professional, made him want to laugh a bit and make fun of her—yet another part of him saw the same determination and doggedness that he saw in the mirror every day. He found himself reaching back, shaking her hand. “Nice to meet you, Tauni. I’m Jack.”
She turned his hand, inspecting it. “Calluses, hardworking hands. Hmm. You’re going to be a military guy, aren’t you?”
Surprised, he yanked his hand back. If he’d learned anything in life, it was that you didn’t let people past your walls until you wanted them there. And how did she determine he would be going military? He found himself engaging the enemy. “I would say, from the way you’re so self-importantly analyzing me, that you need to get out of my chair and find another spot.” He crossed his arms and stood up straight.
The girl just sat there, smirking.
His heart kicked up a notch. Her whole look was hot. Add in the bad-girl expression and the way she taunted him with her eyes, and he found himself attracted to her.
She leaned forward and asked in a low, sultry voice, “You want me to leave, soldier?”
Without knowing what he was doing, he got in her face. “It’s going to be sailor, but yeah, this is my seat. I need you to leave.” It was difficult to focus, though. This close, he could smell a light lemony scent wafting off of her.
Out of the blue, her head tilted up and she pressed her lips against his.
It was brief, but it made him stumble back and curse. “What was that?”
She leaned back, crossing her arms in satisfaction, and pointed to the teacher. “Class is about to start. You’d better find a seat.”
