A Mother Scorned

  He put his hand up to the glass.

  “That woman is you, Rose. I love you. I am going to wait for you!”

  Chapter 107

  The letter Rose had written to Ben explained how when they were together, she had fallen pregnant. Knowing Ben’s mother and the fact that Rose would not abort the baby, she decided not to tell Ben and she ended the relationship. Not long after that she had met Jim and he knew about the baby from the beginning. Jim had agreed to raise the child as his own and that was what he had done.

  This was the secret they had told Stefan and had regretted doing so, although he had deserved to know. As did Ben, that’s why she had made it what she had thought was her dying confession.

  The letter to Fat Pat had simply said: ‘Sorry’

  Chapter 108

  Ben was standing at Stefan’s graveside placing a small stone on his headstone. It was a Jewish custom to recite Kaddish, the mourner’s prayer. With tears streaming down his cheeks, Ben started to recite the prayer for his dead son. When he had finished saying Kaddish, Ben stood there for a little while in silence.

  He finally spoke. “I promise you Stefan, my son, I will avenge your death.”

  Near where Ben was standing someone was digging a fresh grave with a large spade….

  On the other side of town, the ‘check in’ box was being readied for the next party along with the small silver spoons…….
