“Hey!”
She laughed as he splashed water. “I lived for the quick glances that we’d sometimes get, and yes, I would totally overthink them. I was an overthinker.”
“There’s nothing wrong in that.”
“When I saw the women, my fantasies took a dive, but I didn’t stop wanting you. I think I hated myself for that.”
“But I wasn’t a mean person, and you weren’t a whore.” This time he chuckled.
“No, we weren’t, and now I think you’re the biggest baby ever.” She finished washing him, and grabbed a towel, standing up. “Come on, we’re getting you into bed, to rest.”
He thrust out his lip. “Where do you see us in five years?” He took the towel from her, drying his hair and body.
“I don’t know. Do you think we’ll be together? What is your track record with women? Where do you see us in five years?” She patted the bed, and he climbed inside it, faking a cough as he did.
“I want to put all my cards on the table,” he said.
“Okay.”
“I see us together in five years, living in a nice house, a couple of kids, and maybe even married.” He saw he had surprised her, so he carried on. “I’m falling in love with you, Faith. When I look into the future, all I see is you.”
Tears filled her eyes.
This time he chuckled. Taking hold of her hand, he locked their fingers together. “This feeling, it’s not going to go away. I want you, forever. Will you marry me, Faith?”
“You’re asking me on your sickbed?”
“Yep. Give a sick guy a break. Will you marry me?” He knew she was going to say yes even before she said the word. She loved him, and he loved her. There was no future without her.
He loved her, was going to marry her, and have lots of babies with her. That was his plan.
Epilogue
Five years later
“You lied,” Faith said.
“How the hell did I lie?”
“You said we were going to have a nice house, and lots of babies.”
“Okay, I said we were going to live in a big house,” Hunter said, placing a hand on her swollen stomach. “And we’re making babies.” He pressed a kiss to her lips, and then to her very swollen stomach. “Mommy is being a pain in Daddy’s bottom.”
Staring down at her husband’s head, she couldn’t believe how happy she was, how exciting life had become with him. She loved him more than anything in the world. In the past five years they had built a life together.
She giggled as he continued to press kisses to her stomach. They were sitting in the room that would be the nursery. At the moment, the room was bare of any wallpaper, carpets, and color. It was just an old storage room that the previous owners had let waste away.
Hunter moved up her body, cupping her face. “Tell me, Faith, are you happy?”
“Yes, I am.”
“Do you love me?” he asked.
“More than anything. Can I ask you something?”
“Anything.”
“Are you happy? Is this what you dreamed about?” She snuggled in close.
“Baby, this is better than anything I dreamed of us having.” He pressed a kiss to her lips. “I love you more than anything. The best thing that ever happened to me was being rejected for sugar.”
She burst out laughing, wrapping her arms around him. This was her man, her home, and her future, and she loved him more than anything. Of course they were going to live happily ever after. How could they not?
