Seriously? There was no call for whining. Groveling, maybe, but not whining.
“I would love to marry you, Drake,” she said in a no-nonsense tone, and when he started to squeal, she lifted a quelling finger. “But…”
It was adorable the way his expression fell. “But?”
“I made a vow to myself when I was twelve. It was a sacred vow.”
“When you were twelve?”
“Yes.”
“What did you vow?”
“I swore never to marry a squid.”
A smile cracked his face and he tucked her closer, so their bodies were flush and warm and melded against each other. “But you fell in love with a squid, baby.” He kissed her to prove it.
And crap, she had.
With kisses like that, she could never deny him anything, and he knew it. “Marry me,” he commanded and kissed her again. “Marry me, marry me, marry me.” Each demand punctuated with a kiss on her nose, her forehead, her chin.
“Good glory, but you are insistent.”
He grinned. His dimples blossomed. “I’m a SEAL. You know we never give up. You might as well surrender.”
She looped her arms around his neck and leaned against him and gusted a sigh. “Oh, all right. I suppose.”
He perked right up at that. “You will? You’ll marry me?”
“I sup-pose.”
He responded with yet another kiss, but this one was all wet and smoochy and not seductive in the slightest. When he lifted his head, he said, “We should go tell the guys.”
She tugged him back down. “Not yet. There’s something I need to—” A flutter in her midsection stalled her words. She stilled. Her breath hung. Since she was pressed against him, he felt it too. He had to.
His gaze bored into hers. “What was that?” he asked, although in some part of his mind, he probably already knew.
She blinked innocently. “I dunno. Aliens maybe?”
The flutter rippled again, and again. In the last few months, since he’d been gone, it had become more and more frequent. Each time it sent a trickle of happiness through her.
Slowly, his gaze drifted down her body to her belly, assessing. Then he nudged her, measuring the girth of her tummy. The grin, when it came, was slow and sexy, a glorious unfurling of his delight. “Oh my God,” he said.
“Oh my God,” she confirmed.
“When?”
“July?”
He stared at her, his eyes wide, his mouth agape. “Oh my God.” A whisper.
“Are you happy?” She didn’t know why she felt the need to ask, other than she really wanted the confirmation.
He cupped her cheeks and kissed her once more, this time reverently. “Never been happier, baby. Never.”
No need for tears.
Not today.
Today was a good day.
And all the rest would be too.
