“It was quite a sight.” Grant poured himself another drink.
“I have no recollection of it.”
Grant nodded. “Aye. And that is a mercy, I suppose.”
The conversation went on. Men chatted about this and that, but Daniel was oblivious to it all. How could it be that he had remembered things so differently? And then he realized, it didn’t matter.
What mattered, all that mattered, was that he was not such a tarnished soul after all. Aye, he had killed men that day, but—apparently—he’d saved lives too. The realization swelled within him, filled him, healed him.
He glanced at Fia to find her watching him with shining eyes. Her lips kicked up as their gazes tangled.
Ah. And he had her.
He had her love.
Life was beautiful indeed.
She leaned closer and her scent coiled around him, reached down into his gut and yanked. “Come to my room tonight,” she whispered. Her tongue dabbed his ear and his cock lurched.
“I…what?”
“I’ve missed you.”
He nearly jumped from his chair as a hand, a small, delicate, fragile hand, cupped his length. And squeezed.
“Say you’ll come to my room.”
Holy hell. “Damned straight I will.”
The ladies retired shortly after that, but the men were in no mood to end their ruminations. Or their tippling. It was quite late when Daniel was able to break away, pleading exhaustion.
When he entered Fia’s room—one that was inexplicably far from his own—she was sitting at the table by the window where her chess set was arranged, studying the pieces. She glanced up, but she didn’t smile, as he expected her to. Her lip came out. “It took you long enough,” she said.
He chuckled and came to her, dropping a kiss on her forehead. She smelled wonderful, of apples and cinnamon. His ardor stirred. “Grant wouldna let me go. No doubt he could read my intentions.”
She sighed. “He is terribly overbearing. Worse than a father, I think.”
“He cares for you.” Though he’d led Daniel on a merry dance, he had finally given his blessing. Although, it hardly mattered if he had or not. Fia was his.
His.
He set his hand on her shoulder, tangled his fingers in her hair. Stroked her neck.
She glanced up at him with a hungry gaze and placed the knight she held in its starting position.
“Your set is complete,” he said softly.
“Indeed it is.”
He waved at the board. “Shall we play a game?”
“Chess?”
“Naturally.”
She stood then and smiled at him, a smile that made heat whip through him. She wrapped her arms around him and pressed herself against him. “We can play chess any time. I have another game in mind.”
She gave a little wiggle, one that made clear her intentions.
Another game?
Another game, indeed.
