It must have been important to everyone else that night, because when they finally announced that Salvation had, indeed, won best song that year, the entire theater stood up to applaud. Morton was standing in the wings by then, waiting to step out on stage for the entire world. He glanced up to his left and asked, “Are you ready for it? Are you sure you can do this?”
Harrison glanced down at him and said, “I’m about as ready as ever, cutie. Let’s roll.”
Even though no one had been certain Harrison would survive the accident, he’d managed to hang on to life and this was his first public appearance since he’d lost his leg. Morton had watched him fight long and hard to reach this point. It had taken him months of therapy to walk again with a prosthetic leg. The obstacles he’d had to overcome were physical and emotional. The reason he hadn’t arrived with Morton that night at the theater was because he’d been working with the best physical therapist in Los Angeles to prepare for the show. Harrison and Morton were performing Salvation that night together, which had become their trademark song as a couple. And Harrison didn’t want to stumble onto the stage. He wanted to glide out there and show them he could still do everything he’d always done.
As they walked onstage, hand in hand, and the intro to Salvation began to play, Morton noticed Harrison wasn’t even walking with a slight limp. He looked so handsome in his black tuxedo, and so confident with his head held high. Morton squeezed his hand tighter and looked up at him and smiled. He hadn’t had a drink in a year, or taken a drug. He wouldn’t even take prescribed pain killers from doctors, and there had been times he could have used them with his medical issues. He seemed to find the strength he needed from somewhere deep inside, and Morton found his own strength in knowing he was where he was supposed to be at that moment. He was with the man he loved, his husband and collaborator, the essence of his being.
The music grew louder and they bowed a few times for the audience. Morton turned and he looked into Harrison’s eyes and they started singing Salvation. The cheering and applause subsided and everyone took their seats. The video they’d shot at Salvation Mountain the day Harrison had the accident appeared on a large screen behind them. There was still so much left to do, and still so many things to experience. For a moment, Morton felt invincible, because as long as Harrison was still there to help guide and direct him, he knew exactly where he was going.
