Morelos had kept watch over the pizza parlor for hours. He had tracked who went in and who came out, as well of the number of people who had been inside it when he first got there. When two men emerged from the store that he had never seen enter, he came to believe Rico’s tale about a tunnel. The men were dressed in suits but had the look of thugs.
Pullo had a secret tunnel that was no longer a secret. It would be the key to killing the man. Knowing that Tanner and Pullo were friends, it was likely that they met inside the office building on occasion, with Tanner accessing the tunnel to get inside. Morelos would be patient. And when both Tanner and Pullo were in the building, he would make use of the tunnel to attack them.
“Dario Scallato,” Tanner said. He was on the phone in the office with Tim Jackson. Stone’s dying pronouncement that he was working for Scallato had been unexpected. Scallato’s motive must be revenge for his brother’s death. But why wait so long before attempting vengeance? Tanner had killed Maurice Scallato years ago.
“I’ll find out as much as I can about him, Tanner, and then get back to you.”
“Thanks, Tim.”
“I also have friends in Italy that I can contact. One of them is a private investigator Madison and I met when we were living in Venice two years ago.”
“If you do that, warn your friend to be careful. Dario is in the same business that I am.”
“Oh. Okay then. And maybe it won’t be necessary. I might find out enough online.”
After talking to Tim. Tanner lifted his daughter out of her playpen and stood with her while looking out the window.
Dario wasn’t in his brother Maurice’s league. Once Tim gave him a clue where he might find the man, Tanner would eliminate him.
At least the trouble with the Primeros had been resolved, and the sicario Morelos was a memory. Tanner gave Marian a peck on the cheek and left the office to find Sara and Lucas. He was unaware of the multiple enemies planning his demise.
