“But you’re taking on a lot with me.”

      “Let me worry about that.”

Part of her wanted to keep arguing, and part of her wanted to lose herself in his arms. It was the latter impulse that won, because she let her heart rule her head. “I’ll marry you,” she said.

“Oh, honey. Thank you!” He squeezed her so hard she could barely breathe.

Then he lowered his mouth, taking hers in a deep, passionate kiss that left her breathless. It was broad daylight. They were in a courtyard where anyone could walk in and see them. And they were kissing. But there was nothing wrong with it. Nothing wrong with their being together. Not in this world.

“Max,” she murmured, “I never even knew a man like you could exist.”

He stroked her back as he replied, “I don’t know exactly what kind of man I am, but being with you makes me better than I was.”

“That’s true for me, too,” she whispered. “But, Max…”

      “What?”

She was almost afraid to say the next words. “You told me about your family.”

      “And?”

“Can we…can I have your children? And can all of us live together?”

“Oh, yes. But first give yourself a little while to get used to living in this world.” He knit her fingers with his. “I suggest we get out of here. If we’re lucky, we can sneak off to our hotel room for a couple of hours. I’ll tell everyone you need to rest.” His wicked look told her that rest wasn’t exactly what he had in mind.

She grinned back, finally daring to let happiness bloom within her as Max led her out of the courtyard and into the rest of their lives.
