*Erich Hartmann hated the F104 Starfighter and lobbied against its use in the new German Air Force. Although the safety record for the craft proved him right in the end, the Starfighter debate ended his career. The world's greatest ace was shot down by politics. Chuck Yeager almost got killed in one of these aircraft too, though his was heavily modified.
**X15 North American experimental aircraft designed to study exoatmospheric reentry and speeds up to mach 7. With a verified speed of mach 6.75, and an altitude of 350,000MSL, her records were only broken by the space shuttle. Tail number 66670 currently hangs in the Smithsonian Museum. She was the most fantastic aircraft ever flown.
