Marcus took a sharp intake of breath. “You mean…”
Joanna nodded. “I certainly do.”
“A child.” He looked at her in earnest as if wanting to make sure he’d gotten it right.
“A child. Our child.”
“A brother or sister for Reece and Winnie.” A smile spread across his face. “That’s just…” His eyes misted with tears. “Damn it.” He blinked them away furiously.
“Don’t. I like that no matter how strong you are, however protective you are, you are still very human.”
“And bear.” He gave her a lopsided grin. “It must have been the bear side of me that was crying.”
She laughed. “I’ll check with him later.”
“Much later.” Marcus cradled her against his body and then lay her down on the ground. “Maybe we can be a little late ourselves.”
“I thought we were going to finish our chores.” Joanna lifted her head off the ground and kissed his chest, trailing her tongue along his skin and savoring the taste.
“I think we can allow ourselves a little more time. Since this is a special occasion.” He closed his eyes as she grazed her teeth on his nipple, then he slipped his hand under her knee and spread her thighs wider. Joanna guided him inside her, ready for him again.
“I love you so much.” It was Joanna’s turn to blink back her tears. Marcus had given her and the children everything they could ever wish for. Love, a safe and stable home and family. A family that would increase by one more in a few months. Just as it had increased by one more when Sage had her child.
“I love you.” He peppered her face with kisses while his made love to her slowly. “You have made my life complete.”
As they made love inside the small tent, the world outside passed them by. It was as if they were frozen in time. Joanna had taken a chance on a bear shifter and she’d gained more than she ever imagined possible. Since being with Marcus, the word family had taken on a whole new meaning, and that would never change.
Perhaps fate was behind this whole mating bond thing after all. Or maybe it was just down to chance.
