Anyone alive? Raul said, “No. They’re all dead.”
“So…” Andreas cleared his nose, then spat on the polished wood floor. “What do we say?”
Irritated, Raul glared at the kid. “We did our job, just like Mr. Omeke wanted. We came on the day and time we were told to come. We found her like this, in the water, floating, dead. The end.”
“The end.” Andreas nodded, then ran his hand through his wet hair. He stood, then limped to the ladder that led up to the communications room. “I’ll call the coast guard.”
Raul watched the kid disappear up to the second deck, then prayed, “Lord our God, receive our supplications…” After reciting the novena, Raul slipped his fingers over Miriam Macy’s eyes. He had noticed them Friday afternoon back at the office.
She’d had such pretty eyes.
Green like the Sea of Cortez.
ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
I wanted to see what would happen if I took seven Americans to an island and revealed their secrets—and had them pay the ultimate price for that. Cruel, yes, but that’s entertainment. Thanks to Jill Marsal, my brilliant and supportive agent, who also wanted to see what would happen, too. Thank you, Kristin Sevick, my awesome editor, who helped me abuse my darlings. My family has always supported my career and my nature and I want to thank you Mom, Dad, Gretchen, Terry, and Jason for being my support. David and Maya Grace, my travel buds and my loves, thank you for adventuring with me and sending inspirational texts and pictures of people doing and saying stupid stuff. My pages are stuffed with your donated lunacy. To readers everywhere, thank you for picking this up and always giving me a chance to make you breathless.
