As I watched Rukimo roll her away, taking her back down to his dungeon for what might be weeks of abuse, I wondered if her slavery would be more bitter because of the fact that she had, in a bizarre, distorted sense, ‘earned’ it through her betrayal of Jack. Slave girls had much time for reflection as they awaited, bound or unbound, their masters’ pleasures.
But then the other girls had much to rue as well. Inge and Ilse would mourn the day that they decided to take a jaunt from the airport in search of trinkets. The slave girl Joanna, wherever she had come from, would, I was sure, be able to point to some event of happenstance that, if changed, would have prevented her capture and enslavement. Even Mary and Carol, my household pets, had made choices that had condemned them.
I walked back to my cottage in a contemplative mood. I knew that my present life could not go on forever. Sooner or later I would have to make some move to free myself from Klitzman’s clutches. When I did, would I choose to help bring his mighty edifice tumbling down, freeing the hordes of mainly, if not innocent, then at least undeserving, young women, who now wore his brand? Or would I fade into oblivion and try to redeem some other way my complicity and immersion in the pleasures of Klitzman’s Isle?
