Also going by chat groups and forums, superstition is a big thing which, along with witchcraft, lives happily alongside the relaxed Indonesian brand of Islam. Did you know that Indonesia is the world’s largest Muslim country, and that Islam first came to the country in the 1400’s?
Of course, as third generation immigrants to space, the people are no longer purely Indonesian. In the book, I have sought to reflect the feel of this melting pot, rather than copy word-for-word customs that might be seen as clichéd and quaint even today. Some customs I’ve used as they are by tradition, some I’ve adapted and some I’ve cut up, mangled and glued back together in a different way. I’ve done this not to serve my story (well, a lit bit then), but to reflect that culture will change, and people will adapt their ways, and if there is one thing we know about the future, it’s that it’s different from today.
The version of the future presented in this book is entirely my interpretation and extrapolation.
