“So did they or didn’t they?” Alex asked, when Zoe had finished relating Phoebe and Simon’s story.
Knowing full well what he meant, Zoe focused on her folder when she murmured, “What?”
She busied herself with the Lust file, straightening articles and reports and copies of diary pages that were already in perfect order.
“Did they satisfy their lust for each other?”
“I certainly hope so.” She carefully set the folder in her briefcase. “My records indicate that they married.”
“Then I certainly hope they’re still trying.”
Hearing the amusement in Alex’s tone, Zoe gave him a swift look, but his expression was perfectly innocent.
“Shall we partake?” he asked.
“Excuse me?”
“The dessert. It appears quite...tempting.”
But Alex wasn’t looking at the dessert. He was staring at her. Or perhaps she should say he was staring at her as if she were the dessert.
Zoe put it to his reaction to the case, which had, in fact, intrigued her more than she would admit. She’d been hard-pressed not to fantasize exactly as Phoebe had done. That Alex’s image had come to mind with each passage meant only that she needed to get a social life.
Zoe dug into her dessert, a sensual raspberry brülée, and kept their conversation on track. “So, do you have enough information for the chapter on lust?”
“I may have to do some personal research.”
Was he really toying with her or was she reading meanings where he meant none?
Shifting to find a comfort zone, Zoe chose to believe the second option.
