With the Midway Island wrappings off, this proved to be a thin bar, no more than ten inches long, of an exotic coppery-looking metal which no one in the laboratory had ever seen before. An element unknown in the fields of metallurgy and geology. The coded answer from the Question computer was the chemical formula for this newly discovered gold mine in the field of metal research.
For gold mine it was.
The metal, half the weight of steel, had been found in enormous quantities beneath the shelf of coral reefs surrounding the two Midway Islands. Properly exploited and secretly mined, it could revolutionize the manufacture of all war material including the highly important munitions and armaments. The Government of the United States meant to see how far it could take it in the race for space and peace.
Rogers Endore’s employment as an agent had opened an entirely new door of espionage. Despite the intervention of the Bygraves plot, it was now patently obvious that diplomats could serve as highly valuable couriers while performing their usual duties. The moot questions of ethical procedure and deceptive missions could be left to the purists. For the time being, success was the god to be admired.
And given fealty.
In the murky hills above Saigon, a Red Chinese Commissar, the report of Benjamin Bygraves’ failure lying on his desk in cold, cruel certitude, did what he had to do.
Faced with failure and disgrace, he did it.
He took an L-pill.
A brand and concoction that Von Litz would thoroughly approve of.
Goodbye in any language.
Hello to Death.
