“You two are impossible,” Diana laughed and bumped her shoulder.
“It’s Sedeo,” she defended.
“Yeah, right.” Diana snorted.
“Okay, so I help.” Yasmine grinned. She looked at Sedeo again, then back at Diana. “You’ve been married for more than thirty years. Does this feeling ever fade?”
“Never, if you’re lucky.” Diana looked at George and smiled softly.
“Now, none of that. No disappearing,” Yasmine teased repeating what Diana had said to her earlier.
“Hey, we can disappear. We’re not the hosts of this barbeque.” Diana gave her an arched eyebrow.
Yasmine’s heart thumped, and she looked down at the marquis diamond engagement ring and platinum wedding band on her finger. “Yeah,” she said softly.
“You’re hopeless. Still giddy after being married for a few weeks.”
“Hey, we’re still in our honeymoon stage,” she said.
“And with you and Sedeo, I can tell it will last a long time.” Diana linked arms with her as they joined their men.
Sedeo met them as they got close to the grill. He kissed her gently. The sounds of “get a room” rose around the backyard. Sedeo ignored them and kissed her again. A beeping sound pulled them apart.
Yasmine glanced down at her cell phone and unhooked it from her waistband. Seeing the page from the station house, she sighed. Regretfully, she looked back at Sedeo.
He smiled gently. He kissed her again, then pulled back. “Wicked burn,” he whispered.
Her heart filled with love. It was their code word he used whenever she headed off to work. It meant be safe and I’ll be waiting for you when you return.
“Love you,” she replied.
“Love you, too. Now go save lives.” He released her and smacked her on her ass.
“Save that for later.” Yasmine raised her eyebrow.
He chuckled. She hurried to Shelby, kissed her cheek, and waved at the rest of the people in the yard. She strode to the house to get her things.
“MaYassie is going to work,” Shelby said.
“Yes, baby, and we’ll be here when she gets home.” Sedeo’s voice was sure.
Yasmine smiled and entered the house, sure in the knowledge her family would be waiting when she returned from doing what she loved—fighting fires.
