    Run, Billy, Run

    Prev Next

Billy didn’t know till later that Rudy had come in third. But now he didn’t care. He had won the two-mile race, running it the fastest he had run in his life.

He was suddenly surrounded by fans who cheered and applauded him. A photographer from the Lonsdale Tribune took pictures of him and the other winners.

“You came through like a champ, Chekko,” exclaimed Coach Seavers, gripping his hand. “For the first time in years, we’re number one.”

Billy smiled, took a towel that someone had thrust into his hands, and wiped his face.

      “Billy?”

He looked around at the owner of the familiar voice. “Hi, Wendy,” he whispered.

“Congratulations,” she said. She was smiling. She looked beautiful.

“Thanks. Hey, can — can I talk to you?”

      “About what?”

      “The movie on Saturday.”

“Why? Can’t you go?” The wind was teasing her hair.

“Oh, sure, I can. But that bet. I wanted to tell you it wasn’t my idea.”

“I know. And it makes no difference. I told Cody I wouldn’t go with him if he were the last creature on earth.”

      “You did?”

      “Yes, I did.”

He grabbed her hand. He was suddenly cool and relaxed. He felt so good.

“Will you walk with me down to the school?” he asked.

She squeezed his hand. “Come on,” she said.
