      Chapter Seven

Steve toppled onto the ground with a thud, the diamond pickaxe flying away from him. He heard Sarah jog over to him.

"What happened? The portal shut down behind you!"

"I destroyed it." He mumbled, slowly sitting up.

"You could have gotten caught on the other side!"

"I had to take the risk. Or they would have followed us, like you said. This gives us more time."

Steve finally looked around. It was incredibly hot and he saw why. Lava was all around them. It ran off the sides as if it were a waterfall and down into a giant pool below where they sat. There were glow stones all around them, giving off a soft light and strange creatures milling around in the distance.

      "Now what?" Sarah asked.

"The mayor said the legend mentioned that Herobrine was born here. We can look for clues. If it was born here, there might be something here we can use."

"Wouldn't they have already gone and looked for clues?"

"Maybe. But none of them have the connection with Herobrine I have."

"Herobrine was probably pleased they had locked you up. I don't know if he will be now that you're free." Sarah said.

He nodded, "Keep a close eye on me, I guess."

They went through the bag of things that Lexie had brought them as well as the things that Sarah had managed to snatch off the walls. They had the wooden sword, the iron sword but now a diamond sword, a diamond bow and set of arrows and a diamond pickaxe.

"What is this stuff all over the items?" Steve asked.

Sarah peered at it, "It is cake," She blinked. "The girl listens, I'll give her that."

"Yeah, bright idea shoving cake in a bag full of weapons." He replied, trying to get the icing off of it.

Steve destroyed the rest of the portal, to slow them down even further. It meant they'd have to construct a new one to get out but he wasn't concerned. Right now, he needed them to find out some sort of clue of Herobrine being born here and how to break free of his control.

"I still find it strange that Herobrine isn't mentioned in any books or stories about the King Rebellions," Sarah was saying as they put up a shelter, "I mean, it sounded as if he played a giant part and only some carnival guys knew who he was? And if the carnival guys kidnapped him from the Nether, then there has to be something here they found."

"All good points," Steve replied, lost in thought, "I can't help but wonder how the carnival group knew about him too."

"So many questions and no answers."

"One of us should keep watch while the other sleeps," Steve said, "I'll go first."

      "Are you sure?" Sarah asked.

Steve nodded and Sarah crept into their small shelter. He knew enemies in the Nether could blast through it if they felt so inclined so Steve pulled out his sword and looked over the Nether. He could see zombie pig men in the distance and magma cubes on the other side. Nothing looked as though it was interested in Steve and Sarah for the moment.

Steve thought back to how different life had been only a week ago and where he was now. He felt as if there were multiple layers going on and he was only scratching the surface. What was Herobrine's connection to him? Why help him and then try to hurt him later on? Steve tightened his grip on his sword. He was determined to find everything out - even if it changed his life forever.

      About the Author

Mark Mulle is a passionate Minecraft gamer who writes game guides, short stories, and novels about the Minecraft universe. He has been exploring, building, and fighting in the game ever since its launch, and he often uses in-game experiences for inspiration on creating the best fiction for fellow fans of the game. He works as a professional writer and splits his time between gaming, reading, and storytelling, three hobbies and lifelong passions that he attributes to a love of roleplaying, a pursuit of challenging new perspectives, and a visceral enjoyment the vast worlds that imagination has to offer. His favorite thing to do, after a long day of creating worlds both on and off the online gaming community, is to relax with his dog, Herobrine, and to unwind with a good book. His favorite authors include Stephen King, Richard A. Knaak, George R. R. Martin, and R. A. Salvatore, whose fantasy works he grew up reading or is currently reading. Just like in Minecraft, Mark always strives to level up, so to speak, so that he can improve his skills and continue to surprise his audience. He prefers to play massive multiplayer online games but often spends time in those games fighting monsters one on one and going solo against the toughest mobs and bosses he can manage to topple. In every game, his signature character build is a male who focuses mostly on crafting weapons and enchanting, and in every battle, he always brings a one hander sword and a shield with as much magical attributes as he can pour into them. Because he always plays alone, he likes to use his game guides to share all the secrets and knowledge he gains, and who know—he may have snuck some information into his fiction as well. Keep an eye out for his next book!
