I went over to where my jewels lay tumbled on the floor and bent to pick them up, also recovering the boxes they should have been stowed away in and came to sit back down again.
“Lady Strang,” said Mr. Ravens suddenly. I stopped from my task of untangling the necklaces that were entwined together and looked at him.
“Pardon me,” he continued, “but can they be the diamonds I have heard so much about?”
I lifted the tangled necklaces and watched them untwist in the bright sunlight, sending sparks of fire around the room. “These? Yes, these are the diamonds I was married in.”
Not for the first time, I felt a thrill to know I was here, with Richard, legitimately mine.
My hand sought his and we watched together as the jewels slowly untangled themselves, then curled around each other again, seemingly as one.
