“Seems our Mr. Friend might have gotten a little dirty some years back.”
“What do you mean?”
“His name was cleared, but…a girl had come forward and said she’d seen him with a friend that had disappeared. They still never found her. But turns out he had an alibi. Want to guess who he was? I’ll give you a hint. You’re wearing his head.”
Ben’s blood ran cold, and he closed his eyes. The room spun as he found himself back in that field, burying the girl. “Well, she ain’t gonna bury herself. Get digging.”
“Ben?”
His uncle and Cheryl called him as he struggled to see the voice, jerking his head around with his eyes closed.
“You remember who runs you, boy. I’ll have no mercy on your mother if you step out of line and get dirty. This is a clean operation. Keep it that way. Got it?”
“He’s not alone,” Ben gasped, opening his eyes.
“Who? Who’s not alone?” she asked, holding his arms.
“Darren Friend,” he whispered to her. “Darren Friend helped him. He called it an operation, he’s…” Ben stumbled to the bed and sat before looking at Cheryl. “He’s still killing.”
