The sounds of an ambulance and sirens wailed. Rania walked back to the top of the cliff, not wanting to alarm anyone by using her magick. She took her time, struggling for some sort of action she could take, something she could do for Decker. No words would help him. No amount of time would heal this wound.
She reached her son before the paramedics tearing through the forest. The little girl who had been in the field was leading them. Rania knelt beside Decker and touched his face. His skin was clammy and hot, his body shaking as if from fever chills. He clutched something in his hand. It was on a thin silver chain.
Rania tugged it loose and sat back, not surprised to see her son hadn’t been able to crush the amulet of the girl he loved. What surprised her was the faint glimmer in the center of the amber amulet. Barely discernible, it was there nonetheless.
Rising to her feet, Rania peered into Miner’s Drop. Her mind began to work in a new direction, one that just might save her son. She lifted the amulet again to double check the faint flicker of light was still there. Where there was light, there was life.
Somehow, Summer had survived the fall.
