I paused mid-step and stared at him. For a split second, I thought I saw the familiar dark shadows in his gaze I had last witnessed before I locked the door the second time, when he was ten years older. The sense vanished, but his words echoed in my mind. “Teyan …” I started and then stopped, uncertain how to ask him if he remembered a series of events whose occurrence I didn’t even really know the truth about.
“Go, Gianna,” he said softly with a smile. “We will be together again soon. This time, we fly away.”
I swallowed hard and nodded then turned away and walked to the back porch. My heart was pounding and my adrenaline flying. My mind was scrambling to connect what I sensed and felt with the exchange I’d just had with Teyan.
What if the big picture I had convinced myself I was getting a handle on was so much larger, so different, than what I thought I knew? What if there was simply … more?
I reached the porch and paused to look back at Teyan. Moonlight glimmered off something on his chest, and my brow furrowed.
He wore my locket, the one I’d given him in the alternate past … or perhaps, the alternate future. I didn’t know which was the case, but he wore my locket either way. Its presence further confused me but also left me with the knowledge Teyan and I were meant to be, no matter where or when we were.
I studied him for another long moment and then turned away with a sigh.
Too mentally fatigued to debate the truth of my existence any more, I smiled when I thought about returning to Tili with Teyan and then grinned as I reached the dishes in the sink.
I’d have to figure out how to tell my mom about this place, the aliens, and how I was dragging her to another planet, because I wasn’t about to lose her, or Teyan, ever again.
