A choking sob welled up inside her and she covered her mouth with her free hand.
Bard Redfield nodded. “You’re free and you have a father. I want to be a part of your life as much as you’ll allow. We have a lot to catch up on.”
Underneath her hand, her mouth tilted up in a smile. He echoed it and turned to Luke. “I understand I have this young Ranger to thank for keeping you alive. You have my undying gratitude. She’s very precious to me.”
Luke grinned. “She did a pretty good job of saving herself, to tell the truth, sir. And she’s precious to me, too.”
Her heart overflowing, Hope remembered her manners. “I guess you two haven’t been properly introduced. Luke, this is Colonel Bard Redfield, my — my father.”
And wasn’t that a kick to say?
“Colonel Redfield, this is …”
“I’d love it if you’d call me Dad,” he said softly.
Her throat vibrated with emotion. “Dad,” she said shakily. “Meet Luke Reynolds, my —”
“Fiancé,” Luke said firmly. “I’m her fiancé. Pleased to meet you.”
Hope brought a fist to her pounding heart.
She’d always wanted a family, a real one.
