“Detectives, arrest that man,” Ross said.
“I was going to pay back the rest of the money once my company becomes profitable again. We’ve been struggling. Jimmy, I know you know what it’s like to struggle financially. Come on. Just think of it as a loan. You aren’t struggling financially. You can afford to lend me this money,” Markus said.
I watched the detectives slap handcuffs on Markus. They hauled him out of the room as all the investors watched. I didn’t know what to think. My heart was broken, my soul was empty, and the only person I would’ve leaned on during something like this wasn’t at work.
Why wasn’t she at work? She should’ve been here for this. She’d earned her right to gloat.
“Well, Mr. Sheldon, it looks like you’ve found your culprit,” Mr. Matthews said.
“Ross can take this meeting from here. I kept Miss Ternbeau at a distance once she came to me with the information she had pieced together. It’s time for me to call her and tell her this is finished,” I said.
I pushed away from the table and got up as Ross took my place. He started fielding questions from the investors and doing his best to get everything back on track. I strode to my office, slamming my door, and reached for my phone.
I had to call Ashley and talk to her.
I dialed her cell number, but it shot me to her voice mail. I dialed again, and I got the same response. I hung up my office phone, pulled out my cell phone, and dialed her number again.
But she still wasn’t picking up.
She hadn’t been to work for two solid days. No explanation, no call to my receptionist, and no call to Ross. I had to get her back. I had to get her back in my life and in the life of this company. Once this mess got cleaned up for good, I was going to take this company to heights it had never seen, and I wanted her at my side professionally and personally.
I was ready to grovel, to get on my knees and beg for her forgiveness. I was prepared to pay her any salary she wanted and bend to any will she had for us so long as she could come back.
I went to pick up my office phone and dial her again, but a flash on my computer screen caught my eye.
I had an email.
And it was from her.
I held my breath and clicked the link to open it. My gut warned me that something was about to drop.

I read the simple email over and over again. I sent her one back, begging her to come in and talk to me, to meet me for drinks. Or food. Or on the beach for a walk. Or at my apartment. Or at her apartment. I told her she was right. It was Markus who’d siphoned money from the company and that I was sorry for ever doubting her. I apologized for ever getting as angry as I did with her and all of the fighting we had been doing while the stress at the company had been mounting.
I told her I would take her anywhere, agree to any terms, and talk on any ground as long as she would talk to me.
Then I sent the email off into the ether before I flopped down in my chair.
I had nothing else I could do. She wasn’t picking up my calls, and I had a feeling she wouldn’t answer my email. She wasn’t coming back to work, but I refused to process her termination papers. I’d cash in her paid vacation. Her medical vacation. Her personal days. I would max out every ounce of leave I could give her before I would process her leave from this company.
My world was collapsing around me, and I needed her to help me get it back on track. I just needed her.
