(One Week Later)
Big Steps was on the up and up, and it seemed my wedding ring was doing wonders. Men no longer questioned whether I was a commitment man during a dinner meeting or in an investor meeting. No one was asking me who I’d married as of yet—probably assuming—and I never offered the information out.
Except I knew what my actual lucky charm was. I could blame it on the ring all I wanted to, but having Ashley officially at my side was the best thing that could’ve happened to me. To my company too.
We’d been seeing each other officially for an entire week. And while having her around was doing wonders for my disposition, it did make work an exercise in restraint. Looking up and seeing her office right there was hard. There were moments when I imagined striding into her space, locking the door, and having my way with her on top of her desk with the sun sinking below the skyline and her beautiful skin lit up with the decadent colors of the sunset.
She was a distraction of the best kind.
I looked up and saw her head down, furiously jotting down something. Numbers or equations. Possibly notes. She’d had her meeting with Mr. Matthews that I had sat in on, and she’d handled herself with a poise any woman would’ve been envious of. She was gentle but firm in her talking points. Mr. Matthews either needed to commit to a quarterly donation like the rest of the investors or there would have to be a fee that was enacted every time one of his checks failed to clear. Ashley clearly outlined all the heartache his pending checks put us through and the fees that came along with dipping into accounts we shouldn’t be drawing from.
She was direct with her numbers, great with her eye contact, and just gentle enough to wear down Mr. Matthews’ walls. Not only did she get him to commit to a quarterly investment, she also got him to commit to a minimum quarterly investment that was ten thousand dollars more than he was paying originally.
The woman had no idea what she was capable of.
“Miss Ternbeau?”
I watched Ashley look up at me as she held her office phone to her ear.
“Yes, Mr. Sheldon?”
“Could you come into my office at your earliest convenience? I’ve got some things I want to pass your way.”
“I’ll be there as soon as I can,” she said.
I watched her put her phone down as she grinned and shook her head. She finished up what she was doing while I leaned back in my chair and watched her. I loved it when her red hair piled in her face. Hell, I loved it when she wore it down in general. She was doing more of that now. She still wore a hair tie around her wrist, but for the past week, she had worn her hair down.
And part of me was convinced it was specifically for me.
“You wanted to see me?” Ashley asked.
“Close my door, please. This meeting is private,” I said.
She turned around and closed the door as I got up and strode over to her.
“So, what’s this super-secret—?”
I muffled her sentiment with a kiss. My hand pressed into the small of her back as her hands smoothed up my chest. I closed my eyes and felt her fist my coat. That small little action proved to me she wanted my body closer. I pressed her quietly against my closed office door, my hand snaking down her ass and cupping just the slightest handful.
But when I opened my eyes and broke the kiss, she had an almost pained look on her face.
“Are you all right?” I asked.
“Did you call me into your office simply to kiss me?” Ashley asked.
“And if I did?”
“Not complaining. Just ...”
“I didn’t call you in here only to kiss you,” I said. “I also wanted to ask you to dinner tonight.”
“Is that an offer? Or merely a statement of the offer you were going to offer?”
“You’re lucky I had my coffee this morning. I actually followed that statement.”
Her smile lit a fire in my chest as my hand slid from her ass to her hair. I ran my fingers through it, studying the way it framed her face. I ran my thumb along her blushing cheek, her eyes fluttering closed as she took in my touch.
“Have dinner with me tonight, Ashley.”
“I’d love to have dinner with you,” she said.
But there was still that look in her eye, and I wanted to know why it was there.
“What’s going through your mind?” I asked.
“That’s the first time we’ve kissed in your office since ... you know. Everything.”
“You can say her name. She isn’t Voldemort.”
“But she’s dangerous. Don’t you see that?” she asked.
“Nina isn’t dangerous. Merely upset.”
“She told you she was going to make you pay, and she seemed like she meant it.”
“And I’m sure during that moment, she did mean it. But Nina is a woman who doesn’t understand how to operate without someone feeding her cash. She bit the hand nourishing her, and she got burned. It happens to the best of us.”
“I still don’t qu
ite understand how your arrangement with her worked,” she said.
“It was simple. She needed debts paid off, and I needed a woman to come whenever I called to attend charity functions and social events. I took care of her need, and she took care of mine.”
“Yeah. You don’t realize how weird that sounds, do you?”
“I understand exactly how weird it sounds. But now, I have you. And that’s all I want to focus on,” I said.
“I’m still worried. I’m a woman, Jimmy.”
“And a fine woman at that,” I said with a grin.
“I know how a woman’s mind works. If she really wants to do something to you, she’ll find a way.”
“You shouldn't worry about her. Nina’s trying to start things, trying to rift us apart so she can swoop back in and try to wrangle my wallet out of my pocket again. Knowing her, within the month, she’ll have no way to pay for the lavish lifestyle I afforded her. This is all about money. She has no more strings left to tug on.”
“Jimmy, I don’t—”
I silenced her with another kiss and felt her melt into me. Her arms slipped around my neck, and her fingers curled into the bottom tendrils of my hair. Her touch sent shivers down my spine. Her tongue felt like velvet against the inside of my cheek. She cradled into me effortlessly, tugging at dark parts of me I wanted to indulge.
Like we had that night.
“I’m looking forward to dinner,” Ashley said as she broke the kiss.
“I’ll pick you up at your place,” I said.
“I can meet you there. It’s fine.”
“Ashley, let me pick you up for our date tonight.”
“I’m not going to be there much longer anyway. I’m moving in a couple of weeks.”
“Congratulations. Where to?” I asked.
“Ocean Homes.”
“That’s a very nice place and hard to get into. Congratulations.”
