“You must realize,” she said, “that those suspicions have had a while to dig their roots in deeply. And that my reputation precedes me. Whatever you may have experienced at my sisters’ hands—it would not be enough. Not nearly.”
A cold blossom of dread opened inside his chest. “I understand, milady,” he said, his throat dry.
“You’re sure this is what you want?”
He nodded, not trusting his voice.
And rose, and knelt beside her chair, tilting his head away from her, exposing his throat. “Do—do whatever you want with me. Whatever it takes.”
“Listen to me,” she said, “and remember. I give you my word on this: You’ll heal, in time.”
His screams began moments later.
And lasted for hours.
