Another Offering
Snow whipped around them as the portal opened before Kai. He gripped Roo closer to him, almost fearful now to go through. This had been what he’d asked for that day their child was born. Now he was unsure, worried what it could do to the wriggling baby in his arms.
Or the one growing within his stomach.
Nine months had passed since Rhewgard’s birth. Another Offering was upon them. But this one would be much different than the last.
Therios stepped through, disappearing from sight.
Kai took a deep breath before stepping through as well.
When he hit the warmth on the other side, he struggled for a breath. Looking down, he saw, Rhew was gasping some, too. Therios took the babe from his arms and waved a hand before them both.
Once Kai could breathe easily, he turned to see his tribe staring back in disbelief.
Tona and another young male, Ke’ten, hung bound from the two pillars before them.
“Kai’toa?”
Kai turned to see his sister and grandmother looking on with shock. He smiled at them before his Nanni and sister raced closer. They hugged him tight, both of them weeping.
“You’ve come home to us,” Nanni cried in joy. “You’re so cold,” she added, looking up at him, concerned.
Kai pulled away slightly, but still held them both close. “I’m only here to visit, Nanni. To tell you I am well… and that I love you both.”
Tears shone in her eyes.
“There will be no other Offerings,” Therios announced to the tribe. “Kai’toa was the one to bring new life to my world and yours. He gave me a son…” Therios caressed Roo’s cheek. “He has given you back this world. The ice will melt… and new land will teem across it.”
The tribe bowed their heads. The shaman began to chant lowly, and the tribe joined in.
“You? You gave him a son?” Nanni whispered the question.
“Yes,” Kai answered lowly.
“I would’ve liked to see that,” his grandmother whispered back.
He took her hand and placed it on the slight swell of his stomach. “Another grows now.”
She frowned some and searched his face. “You are happy?”
He smiled, love overflowing in his heart. “I am happier than I ever knew I could be.”
Therios moved closer, drawing Kai into the curve of his arm. Roo snuggled in close to Therios, his bright stare on his great-grandmother. Kai looked at the two males who had captured his heart before looking back to Nanni.
“They are my everything.”
“And you are mine,” Therios said before capturing Kai’s lips.
