“Why are you here early? Is something wrong?” Maal asked.
“I believe it’s time to pass on my power to my eldest son,” Dag said before taking Maal’s hand and drawing him out to the main room to the house. He called for Ash to come to them and turned toward their firstborn. “Do you remember what we discussed last summer?”
Ash nodded.
“What did you discuss?” Maal asked.
“Ash will now take my place. Tomorrow, he will go to the ceremony… he will ask for their sacrifice. Hopefully this new tribe of yours will do the right thing.”
Maal looked between them. He wasn’t ready to say goodbye to his son. “But… he’s still so young.”
“He’s a man now… and a demi-god. He is strong enough to take some of my power on.”
“I want this, Papa,” Ash said. “I want to see the world in the same way Father does.”
Dag stepped before Ash and placed a palm to their son’s chest. An illumination rose under his hand, and Ash gasped, as if in pain.
But then it was over and Ash smiled. He placed a gentle kiss on Maal’s forehead. “It's my time to shine, Papa.”
Maal hugged his boy tight before letting go. He watched as Ash exited.
“And what of you?” Maal asked, fearful. Was this the end of their love affair? Did Dag die out? “What happens to you now?”
Dag-ra carefully took the newborn from his arms and smiled down at the small bundle. Without lifting his gaze, he spoke. “I remain with the human I love, the male who had such strength to give me all these powerful sons.”
Maal was afraid to get his hopes up. “All the time?”
“Day and Night,” Dag whispered before turning to smile at him. “Into eternity.”
Later, after he’d had his fill of holding his newest son, hugging his other sons, catching up, and feasting long into the night, Dag-ra took his human to bed.
Long into the night they made love, their bodies entwined.
And they made baby number twenty-one.
