“Organize a meeting with Diego,” she instructed, carefully placing the message back into the envelope.

Clearing his throat, Foster placed his hands behind his back, “Mother… Do you think that is wise at this juncture?”

When she looked up, his gaze was on what remained of the document she was going over prior to the arrival of the package. Mother held her tongue, she could have told him everything, she could have held up the photograph as justification for her command, but she didn’t. Instead, she leveled a gaze at the likeness of a man who had served her upwards of twenty years.

Woman and Artificial Intelligence locked eyes, but it was the AI whose eyes fell away. Bands of icy blue started at spit shone shoes, up khaki slacks in which a boxy dark green shirt was tucked. It pulsed over his salt and pepper beard that became more salt than pepper each day in accordance with its coding.

Mother watched as bands of light slid over him, then they soon faded away as he shook his head.

“As was anticipated, the standard line of communication has been severed, I will have to construct a new one. I will keep you informed of my progress,” Foster effected a slight bow and begun to turn away.

With this gesture, he would have faded away as he walked away, but he turned back to face his boss. He would not be Foster if he did not.

      “What is it?”

The simple question was a hand coming down to her. It was just for her to grip it, but Mother shook her head, fearing that in trying to pull her out she would pull him in. She knew she would eventually have to tell him, to share with him the Hell that was tucked into a dark gold envelope. In this moment, she needed to keep climbing, she had to focus on the flicker of light at the very top of the void.

“Nothing,” she managed to say. She looked down at the document still displayed on the desk display. It would mark the end of a chapter in her life. It would afford not only her but her family, a freedom that she never thought was possible. Then she looked across at the image on the four by six cardstock, and with a sniff, Mother said, “Now, I need to meet with Diego.” I need to know who executed Audra, she left unspoken.

      About The Author

Born on the small Caribbean island of Antigua, I’ve always loved to read but I never considered writing, in fact, I could count all the Antiguan writers I knew about on one hand. Then I discovered self-publishing and it became my passion and I’ve been writing since. This is my first piece of fiction set in the Caribbean and I intend to return to the Caribbean with many more stories in the form of novels and novellas.
