“What?” God and I asked simultaneously.
“Ian met,” she repeated.
“What do you mean?” I asked.
A horn blared behind me.
I reached to start the car and realized a keychain was attached to my keys. I looked down and saw that it was a pair of miniature boxing gloves.
I grinned, loving the surprise and glad that he was nearby.
God saw the gloves too. “Oh, you’re a hell of a watchdog letting a stranger into the car.”
The dog bared her teeth at him.
“Easy, girl,” I urged.
She barked, “Left Ian.”
I turned to my left hopefully, looking for my brother. Then, remembering the dog has no sense of direction I looked to my right, but he wasn’t there either.
“Left Ian,” she repeated.
“Any moron can see that he left,” God told her.
“Left Ian!” she barked. “Left Ian! Left Ian!”
I grabbed her snout in both of my hands to keep her from shouting. “Calm down. I don’t understand what you mean.”
Silenced, she pawed at the car’s cup holders.
That’s when I saw them. Two jars of olives. One black and one green.
My heart swelled.
“No,” I said, my eyes welling up. “That’s salty.”
