He looks at me for an answer to the question asked with his violin: Can we go back to being friends? NO! I want to shout. Platonic friends was then, before we kissed. This is the post-kissing phase. But the truth is, he’s right. Getting involved with Clem is too confusing. I can hardly manage a relationship with one guy. How could I possibly deal with feelings for two?
“Okay,” I manage to say. I get up to go, thinking that’s it.
“Wait!” Clem blurts as I reach the door. “There’s something else.” He grips his violin, as if he wishes the something else could be music and not words. “When you go back to Philly you can decide what you want. After you spend time with Jesse. I’ll wait for you.” He looks into my eyes and says, “You’re worth it.”
This time my throat is too tight to say anything. I nod, and slip out of his room, wishing I, too, had music to express my heart.
