So…I have this really bad habit. Well, not really a “habit” but something weird I do, and I don’t even know I’ve done it till it’s too late. When I’m writing a book, I oftentimes will name characters in that story similar names and not even realize it till later—and then, when I discover what I’ve done, I know the similarities could make for a poor reading experience (unless the characters having similar names is a plot point).
I did it with Bullet with two important characters and had to change one of them, and I’ve done it other times; I have no doubt I’ll do it again!
In Shenanigans, I chose Morgan’s name early on and loved it. It’s perfect for my feisty, foul-mouthed heroine with a heart of gold—er, silver. Conor’s ideal woman from high school, our villainess, perhaps, is now named Raquel, but she didn’t start out that way, and that’s thanks to my awesome Facebook group, Jade’s Bullet Babes. When I began the editing process, it was time to fix stuff like that. My brain was tapped out, so I asked my group for good first names for a woman who is the heroine’s enemy. My group didn’t let me down, giving me all kinds of great suggestions.
There were sooooo many good names to choose from!
As you know, I settled on Raquel. Big thank you to Gina Marcantonio for giving me this idea. And huge thanks to these other awesome readers who also had great suggestions:
