His lip curled up.
“They’re not criminals, are they?” she asked.
He hesitated to answer. To say yes would have meant throwing himself in with them. “That depends who you ask.”
“A mystery. I guess the only way to find out is to go with you. If that’s okay?”
“Don’t ask me. It’s up to him,” he said, gesturing to Kane who was eyeing her.
Colby offered back a strained smile as he headed in, his thoughts turning to his family, what awaited him back home and what they would say upon his return. The whole thing left a pit in his stomach. Ten years was a long time. It was dangerous when he left, he couldn’t imagine what it was like now. After changing into fresh clothes, and shaving the growth from his face, he collected a camo-style backpack he’d filled with gear for the road, gear that would help him survive the blackout, survive the breakdown, survive the lawless.
