“I didn’t know what to say,” Rachel said, eyes filling up with tears. “Lila, you’re my best friend. I was afraid that you would throw our friendship away.”
Lila’s body trembled with anger. She took a wobbly step back from the two of them. Forcing her chin up, Lila stared straight into Alex’s eyes. It scared her to death to know that two people she had known and trusted her entire life could keep an affair and pregnancy a secret from her.
“You’re right,” she said, sucking in a watery breath. “The wedding is off. I helped you make your decision, Alex. You can have her.”
She twisted on the heel of her foot and left the both of them in the dark shadows of the church.
