Saffron spun around and looked in the direction of the office. “I think it’s a wonderful idea for us all to take a moment and celebrate each other.” Her expression faltered and she turned back to face Mac. “How is your mom doing? It must be bittersweet in so many ways.”
“She’s okay.” Mac’s smile faltered. “It helps that your mom, Hilda, and Betsy also walked down the aisle. It meant she didn’t feel so left out.”
“Four strong women,” Saffron agreed. “Although, from what Kassia said, Betsy might not be single for much longer.”
“What did I miss?” Mac asked in surprise.
“Betsy has been dating Elmer Keswell. He is a friend of Hilda’s and lives in Cougar Ridge. Apparently, he’s gate-crashing the cruise.” Saffron giggled. “I think they have persuaded my mom to go, too. I don’t think she even knows what a vacation is.”
“Here they are.” Mac held his breath as his family walked around the corner of the office and headed toward them. They carried bottles of champagne and glasses and wore the biggest smiles he’d ever seen. They were happy and he could not be more proud.
“There you both are. We thought you’d run off into the forest,” Sue said, her voice laced with excitement and her cheeks flushed pink.
“Not on our wedding day,” Mac replied as he and Saffron walked to meet them. “Here, let me help.” He let go of Saffron’s hand and took a couple of bottles of champagne from Hex.
In something resembling organized chaos and with a lot of giggling and hugging, eventually, everyone had a glass filled with champagne, even Wes and Jonas. Although, theirs weren’t full.
“I want to say a few words since this is one of the last times we will all be together for a while.” Sue swallowed hard, her eyes misted with tears. “Thank you for being you.” She raised her glass to her sons. “I would not change a thing about any one of you. And I know your dad would be very proud of the men you have grown to be.”
“And he’d be very proud of you, Mom,” Hex told Sue.
She waved her hand across her face as she composed herself. “I also want to say how happy I am that our family has grown, and I love each and every one of you. We’ve been through a lot to get here but we’re stronger now and we’ll always be here for each other. I can’t wait to see what the next stage of our lives brings. I know you ladies are planning to start a business together. I know it will be a success. And I also cannot wait to meet my first grandchild.”
“Neither can I.” Hex kissed his new wife on the cheek.
“I also can’t wait to see Wes and Jonas, who I see as my honoree grandchildren, grow into the fine young men I know they will be.” Sue raised her glass. “Here’s to happy ever afters and happy new beginnings.”
“To happy ever afters and new beginnings.” Everyone raised their glasses and drank to the toast.
Winter was over in Bear Creek, but spring was just around the corner and brought the promise of new life and happiness.
