I looked over my shoulder at the governor. “Thank you.” Then I looked to my parents while Braun still held me. “I’m sorry I didn’t say goodbye.”
“You had good reason,” Mom said, taking Dad’s hand. “Being in love is… out of this world.”
I rolled my eyes at her joke, and Braun put me down, although he seemed somewhat reluctant to do so.
“What does Maxim mean, mate? With your grandfather well, there should be no urgent need for visitation.”
Maxim cleared his throat, and I looked to him, then to Dr. Surnen. Shit. This wasn’t how I wanted to do this, but then again, I had no idea how I pictured telling my alien lover, my alien mate, that he was going to be a father.
I bit my lip, set my hand on my flat belly. My mother gasped, and I knew she’d caught on.
“Mate?” Braun looked worried. Confused. I couldn’t bear to keep him in suspense.
“I… I’m pregnant.”
Braun stared at me, his eyes widening. He remained still, and I wasn’t even sure he was breathing. “What?” he whispered.
“I’m having your baby. I know it was a surprise and sudden but… well, I guess it was meant to be.” I wasn’t going to talk about his super swimmers in front of my family.
“Baby?”
I nodded. “Baby.”
“You?”
I nodded again, starting to get worried. “Me. And you. Us. Are you… happy?”
“Happy?”
All of a sudden, his eyes rolled up into his head, and like a redwood in the flipping forest, he tipped over. Fainted dead away. The thump of him hitting the ground was loud, and from some hidden corner of the room, Oscar hissed.
Gramps laughed and came down the steps to wrap an arm around me as we stared down at Braun, out cold. Dr. Surnen knelt beside him and waved a wand over his face.
“The guy fought the Hive, survived being captured and integrated,” Maxim said. “Escaped. Made it through Earth’s stupid reality shows. Even lived through his mating fever. But fainted dead away because you’re having a baby.”
Gramps tipped up my chin and smiled.
“Not many people can fell a beast.”
“My beast,” I said, then knelt and took Braun’s hand, tried to revive my stunned Atlan. As if deciding this was the best moment for a grand entry, Oscar walked to Braun and sauntered up onto the Atlan’s chest as if Braun was his personal mountain. He curled into a ball and immediately started to purr.
I stared at my boys and couldn’t stop smiling. “If this is what happens when he finds out we’re having a baby, I can only imagine what he’ll do if we have twins.”
Gramps burst out laughing and caught Dr. Surnen’s eye. “They do run in the family, Doc. They do indeed.”
“I shall need to examine you immediately,” the doctor replied, not in the least amused.
I shook my head. “Later.” I leaned down and kissed my unconscious hero. He’d saved me in so many ways. I was ready to start my new life on a new planet with him and a new baby. Braun was my life now. Time to start living it. With him.
He just had to wake up first.
