     A Season for Fireflies

A year ago, Penny Berne was the star of her high school’s theater department, surrounded by a group of misfit friends and falling in love for the first time. Now her old friends won’t talk to her, her new best friend is the most popular girl in school, and her first love, Wes, ignores her. Penny is revered and hated. Then, in a flash, a near-fatal lightning strike leaves Penny with no memory of the past year—or how she went from drama nerd to queen bee. As a record number of fireflies light up her town and her life, Penny realizes she may be able to make things right again—and that even if she can’t change the past, she can learn to see the magic where she never could before.

    My Life as a Fake

      Peter Carey
     My Life as a Fake

Fiendishly devious and addictively readable, Peter Carey’s My Life as a Fake is a moral labyrinth constructed around the uneasy relationship between literature and lying. In steamy, fetid Kuala Lumpur in 1972, Sarah Wode-Douglass, the editor of a London poetry journal, meets a mysterious Australian named Christopher Chubb. Chubb is a despised literary hoaxer, carting around a manuscript likely filled with deceit. But in this dubious manuscript Sarah recognizes a work of real genius. But whose genius? As Sarah tries to secure the manuscript, Chubb draws her into a fantastic story of imposture, murder, kidnapping, and exile–a story that couldn’t be true unless its teller were mad. My Life as a Fake is Carey at his most audacious and entertaining. From the Trade Paperback edition.

That way you, the reader, can take a virtual vacation to these historic locations! Visit Lisa's webpages to see photos and write-ups of the diners. All of the Diner Mystery series contain no violence, no swearing, and no intimacy, so they are suitable for teens and up. You can read the books one-by-one as they are released, or you can wait for the boxed sets to be published once the series gets enough books in it. It's your choice! I try to write them right after I visit, so that's why there are sometimes gaps in the release schedule. It's not always easy to get to a diner when they're open!A portion of all proceeds benefits battered women's shelters.

    Void

     Void

It’s New Year’s Day. Fifteen-year-old Skylar Adams has woken up next to Zack, her most hated classmate. As she sneaks out the party house, trying not to wake her boyfriend, Riley and their friends passed out on the couch, she tries to piece together the night before. It started with drinks, dancing and fireworks, but how did she end up sleeping with the enemy? It was 1862 and what a year it was. A man by the name of Jesse Wells was about to become a legend, but not the kind a legend to be proud of. Jesse had a mean temper, and when the Saloon doors swung open things got quiet, and people scattered. Jesse would enter the Saloon, and spit a wad of tobacco juice on the floor, and shoot his six- shooter in the air, and say, "Where's my whiskey?" The bartender would rush over, and hand a bottle over to Jesse, and run back to the bar in fear for his life because he was the third bartender that replaced the other two that were shot dead by Jesse Wells for not tending to his every need. As Jesse was walking past a table of men playing poker one of the men at the table started laughing at Jesse and Jesse said, "What's so funny?" Right before the man had a chance to answer Jesse he shot the man right between the eyes, and said, "Anyone else thinks it's funny?" The men just sunk in their chairs, and Jesse kicked the dead man out of his chair, and sat down, and said, "Boy's you ready for some poker?"

    A Burning Problem

      David S Reynolds
     A Burning Problem

A Burning Problem is a short satirical essay on education reformA Burning Problem is a short satirical essay on education reform. From the introduction - We have a problem in this nation. Fires in small buildings close to fire stations are being put out quickly and fires in large buildings far away from fire stations are taking longer to be put out and need more manpower. This is unacceptable. All Fires should be put out in an average amount of time with the same number of personnel."This insightful satire frames the current public school system in America as if it were a local fire department. Not only does it help to inform the reader on issues such as No Child Left Behind, it also shines a much-needed light on why the system doesn't work. Although the language could be smoother at times, the smart metaphor will have you snickering."
