“I figured out what it is,” he replied. “The thing that’s been bothering me for so long. The thing that’s wrong with the world.”

He pointed to the horizon. There was Black Creek Woods, whispering with mysteries. There was the radio tower, its pinprick red lights blinking in the growing dark. There was the peak of Piper Mountain, standing alone against the dimming night sky.

“There are no mountains in Indiana,” Grim said, and smiled like a great burden had been lifted off his shoulders.

      Acknowledgments

This is the second book in a row I have to give the biggest thank-you to my agent, Louise Fury. Thank you for being so perceptive, and thank you for telling me it was okay to say no. It was exactly what I needed to know. I will never forget it.

Thank you to Kristin Smith—I hope this wasn’t too spooky for you—and all of Team Fury.

Thank you to Virginia Duncan, who provided me the time and space I needed to write this book; Katie Heit, once-assistant, now editor herself!; Sylvie Le Floc’h, amazing designer; and Tim Smith and his team of copyeditors. Big thank you to Chad W. Beckerman for the absolutely kickass cover art.

Thank you to my dad for patiently answering all (ALL) my questions about Indiana cops, laws, and prisons. Thank you to Darci Cole, Brett Werst, Marieke Nijkamp, and Rebecca Coffindaffer for reading the mess that was early drafts of this book and/or keeping me alive with talks of fantasy and science fiction and tabletop gaming. As always, thank you to Christina Bejjani for listening to my woes, talking to me about books and writing, and generally just being an awesome person. Thank you to Colin Dickey for writing Ghostland: An American History in Haunted Places, the book that gave Addamsville its heart.

Thank you to Gus, the best boy, a paragon of dogs.

And finally, thank you to my parents and my siblings. You’re all jerks, and I love you.
