Karen looked up at Clay, her eyes filled with love. “Are you sure the other members will understand?” she asked.
“They’ll have to,” he replied. “A leader isn’t perfect, even if he has the perfect mate.”

“Oh, damn…” Clay spoke the words under his breath, drawing a frown from the minister. Behind him, his best man, Jake, chuckled.
Karen was indeed a vision, and no one could have blamed the groom for the uncharacteristic reaction to seeing his bride walking towards him in a simple but elegant gown that clung to her curves. The fitted bodice cupped and lifted the mounds of her firm breasts, their slight heaving the only indication of her nervousness.
Clay could see the smile through the veil that partially obscured her face, and smiled back. When she reached the front, Karen turned and handed the bouquet of wildflowers to Ann Marie before turning back to Clay.
It’s really happening, she thought, as the memory of the past months flashed through her mind. She’d come to Heartfield intent on bringing it down, but the commune had lifted her up. She’d come to find the truth, but the truth had found her.
She listened to the vows. Love. Honor. Cherish. Obey. Did she promise to do all those things? She did. Oh, yes.
Clay in turn promised to cherish, guide and love and protect his wife until death parted them. Her heart thrilled with each word.
The minister pronounced them man and wife. Clay pulled Karen to him, her lips finding his as everyone in the hall erupted into cheers.
And then Karen and Clay turned to face the community – their community – and take the first steps into a new life, together.
