Her features were his.
The chin and cheekbones softened a bit, but the lips, the nose—they were his. The moment of recognition was at once so awful and so intensely beautiful that Cooper didn't know how to feel. Suddenly, he realized that this moment was a gift. He was feeling everything that it was possible for human beings to feel, all at once.
He reached out and touched the glass, getting as close to her as he could. He opened his mouth to speak. He knew she didn't know him and could no longer hear him. But he also knew she had a name—and a name meant nothing until someone spoke it.
"Kate," he said, hearing the word drift out of his mouth.
He had thought he would die if he had to kill her. He had been sure the weight of what he had done would crush him more completely than a black hole. But he had survived to look on her face. And now he realized he had a responsibility to live. He had to live for both of them.
"I'm sorry, Kate," he said. "I'm sorry." Cooper Hawkes knew that he would be haunted by the memory of his unborn sister for as long as he lived.
But as he looked into her face, it didn't feel like a curse.
It felt like a blessing.
