I can’t sleep, so Laurie and I stay up late talking.

It’s going to be August by the time the adrenaline wears off.

So we sit in the kitchen and try to figure out the parts of the conspiracy that we’re not sure of. If Jeremy ever pleads guilty, maybe we’ll have the last details confirmed.

“I think Kennon wanted to blame Arthur for Kristen’s murder all along,” I say. “That’s why he forced her to write the letter. She wrote it just before he killed her.”

“How did they get it in the house?”

“Karen had told me that there was a break-in at the house while everyone was at the funeral. Jewelry was taken, but I think that was a cover. They were just planting the letter.”

“But they never followed up to find another way to implicate Arthur. When the letter wasn’t found, they let him off the hook.”

“Right. Because of the skin under her fingernails. The police were set on the person with that DNA being the killer. So Kennon had to back off, especially when Kristen’s parents didn’t find the letter. It worked out for him because Arthur backed out of the tech area, giving Kennon free rein.”

      “So now what?”

“Now the government will have to track down all these routers and figure out what’s going on. Sam says it will be an impossible task, but that’s not our problem. My next step will be to do a public interview, letting everyone know that Arthur Wainwright was neither a murderer nor a suicide victim. It’s the very least I can do.”

“Poor Noah,” Laurie says. “Talk about being in the wrong place at the wrong time.”

“But it all worked out because of your three-month Christmas season. If you hadn’t gotten Danny’s wish list when you did, Noah would be heading to prison for the rest of his life.”

We head up to bed. Ricky is sleeping at Will Rubenstein’s, so Laurie puts on some romantic music.

      “Jingle Bells.”
